Apple announced its first foldable, the iPhone Duo, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro Max on 9 September 2026. Most comparisons line up the cameras and chips. This one compares the part you look at all day — the screens, how iOS 27 lays out the Lock Screen on each, and what that means for the wallpaper you set.
Screen size and shape
The iPhone Duo has two displays: a 7.6-inch inner screen (1878×2670, 430 ppi) that opens like a book, and a 5.4-inch cover screen (1398×2034, 460 ppi) for use when it is closed. Apple says the cover screen has about 90 percent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is a single 6.9-inch display at 1320×2868 and 460 ppi.
The shapes differ more than the sizes. Every iPhone 18 Pro screen is tall and narrow at roughly 19.5:9; both Duo screens are close to 1.4:1, the inner one about 12.8:9, so the Duo feels closer to a small tablet when it is open.
Brightness, Always-On and the crease
Both phones use Super Retina XDR OLED with ProMotion up to 120Hz, an Always-On display and up to 3000 nits of outdoor peak brightness. The Duo's inner display adds a nano-texture finish to cut glare, and early hands-on reports say it also keeps the fold crease hard to spot — it is still there, just faint.
Dynamic Island and the iOS 27 Lock Screen
On the 18 Pro Max the Dynamic Island is smaller than last year's and can show up to three Live Activities at once.
On the Duo, iOS 27 rearranges the interface around the fold. Lock Screen controls and the Dock sit along the side of the display instead of the bottom, the Dynamic Island runs vertically along the side of the cover screen, and the status bar moves into a corner. Open, the Duo shows two Home Screen pages side by side, and set down it starts StandBy on whichever screen faces up.
Wallpaper sizes: what fits where
iPhone 18 Pro Max: 1320×2868. Any tall iPhone wallpaper made for the 17 or 18 generation fills it edge to edge — 2Live's 1206×2622 art included.
iPhone Duo: 1878×2670 on the inner display and 1398×2034 on the cover, and Apple's own Duo wallpapers ship as separate files for each screen. A tall 19.5:9 wallpaper on either Duo screen is scaled to the width and loses about a third of the picture off the top and bottom, so choose art with the subject in the middle, or art composed for the Duo's shape.
