संक्षेप में
- Compact clock is a per-wallpaper setting, not a global switch — one lock screen can use it while the next keeps the big clock.
- The usable subject band grows from roughly 32–80% of screen height to 15–80% — about 24% more room.
- Nothing you already own breaks. Your old wallpapers simply no longer need the top crop that used to protect the digits.
Every iPhone wallpaper you have ever set was composed around a clock that owned the top third of the screen. Subjects got pushed down, tall things got cropped, and a portrait of anything with a head tended to lose the head. iOS 27 ends that: the time shrinks to a single line beside the date in the top corner, and the space it used to occupy becomes wallpaper.
Here is exactly where the new safe zone falls, why it is a second set of rules rather than a replacement for the old ones, and where to get 4K wallpapers cut for it.
चरण दर चरण
- 1
Open the lock screen editor
Press and hold your lock screen and tap Customize → Lock Screen. You can also go to Settings → Wallpaper and tap Customize under the lock-screen preview.
- 2
Tap the clock
Select the time itself to open the clock options. On iOS 27 there is a layout control alongside the familiar font, weight and colour pickers.
- 3
Choose the compact layout
Pick compact. The time moves up beside the date as a single line and the rest of the screen becomes your wallpaper. One thing to know: the Liquid Glass opacity slider is not offered in compact mode — font, weight and colour still are.
Compact is chosen per lock screen. Swipe to another wallpaper and it keeps whatever layout you gave it.
- 4
Reposition your wallpaper upward
Because the clock no longer occupies the upper third, drag the image up. Anything you previously cropped away to protect the digits can come back into frame — the top of a lighthouse, a full head, the crown of a tree.
- 5
Keep the big clock where it suits the shot
Wallpapers built around the old composition — a subject sitting low with deliberate empty space above — still read better under the large clock. Use compact where the subject needs the height, and leave the rest alone.
The new safe zone, in numbers
Measured against screen height, the compact layout gives you this: the top 14% is the quiet row, shared by the date, the small clock and any widgets. Your subject's top edge can now reach that 14% line — under the large clock it could not safely go above about 32%.
Put the visual anchor of the image between 30% and 75%. Leave the bottom 12% clear: the flashlight and camera buttons and the swipe indicator live there and have not moved. Keep a 6% margin on each side. Working master size is 1320 × 2868.
The net effect is roughly 24% more usable canvas — which sounds modest until you try to fit a vertical subject into the old band and realise it was never going to work.
Why this is two rule sets, not one
Because the layout is chosen per wallpaper rather than globally, both compositions will exist side by side on the same phone for years. That is the part most coverage misses. A wallpaper cut for the large clock is not obsolete on iOS 27, and a wallpaper cut for compact will sit oddly if you put a large clock over it — the subject runs straight into the digits.
So we cut every wallpaper twice: one version centred and complete for compact, one cropped 12–16% off the top so the subject pushes into the clock band for the large layout. Same artwork, two files. Pick whichever matches the lock screen you are building.
What it means for the depth effect
The depth effect itself is unchanged in iOS 27 — a clear foreground subject still lifts in front of the time. But depth only fires when the subject actually overlaps the clock band, and the compact layout moves that band to the very top of the screen.
That cuts both ways. A tall subject whose top edge never reached the old band may now overlap the compact one and start triggering depth for the first time. A subject deliberately placed to tuck under the large clock may stop overlapping anything at all. It is worth re-setting your favourites once after you update and seeing which way each one falls.
The subjects that finally work
Vertical, full-body and tall. A lighthouse. A waterfall shot end to end. Lanterns strung up a tree. A standing character seen head to foot. An astronaut. A cat on a windowsill with the whole window in frame. All of these used to arrive at the lock screen with their top 20% removed.
Portrait photography benefits most obviously — a person photographed from the waist up finally keeps their head. If you have a shot you gave up on because the clock ate it, try it again.
अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल
Is the compact clock a setting I turn on once?
No — it is chosen per lock screen. Tap the clock while customising a wallpaper and pick the compact layout. Your other lock screens keep whatever layout you gave them, so you can run both.
How much more wallpaper does the compact clock show?
The usable subject band goes from roughly 32–80% of screen height to 15–80% — about 24% more room. In practice it is the difference between cropping a tall subject and not cropping it.
Do I need new wallpapers for the iOS 27 compact clock?
You do not — everything you own still works. But wallpapers composed for the large clock carry a top crop they no longer need, so a set cut for the compact layout will look noticeably more complete.
Why can't I adjust the Liquid Glass opacity in compact mode?
iOS 27 does not offer the translucency slider on the compact layout. Font, weight and colour are still adjustable — the slider is available on the large clock.
Does the compact clock change how live wallpapers behave?
Motion is unchanged: press and hold and it plays. What changes is that more of the still frame is visible the rest of the time, so choosing which frame iOS freezes on matters more than it used to. 2Live lets you pick that frame.
